Scaling up sustainable biofuels: value chains, technologies, and policy pathways for aviation and maritime transport

The event organised by the SEAFAIRER and ABATE projects aims to explore the use of biofuels in transport sectors that are difficult to decarbonise (aviation and maritime) with a focus on the entire value chain, from production to end use. Particular attention will be paid to conversion technologies, including improvements in fast pyrolysis technology, as a key option for biomass valorisation and advanced biofuel production.

The parallel event will also highlight the infrastructural, logistical and regulatory challenges for biofuel production and use. Specifically, Fraunhofer will explore aspects related to biomass production and processing infrastructure (to be confirmed), and Imperial College London will contribute to the analysis of regulatory challenges (to be confirmed), including biofuel standards, existing regulatory frameworks and prospects for alignment at European and international level, especially.

In this context, discussion will focus on how to operationalise the targets of REDIII, which raises the EU renewable energy target to 42.5% by 2030 and enforces stricter biomass sustainability and traceability criteria.
