Dear Biomass Industry Stakeholder,
New global developments have created uncertainties in the biomass market with the most critical being the withdrawal of big oil from low carbon fuels deployment resulting in reservations whether EU and globally mandated targets can be met. Biomass resources are again being attacked as unsustainable when used for energy and there is a significant push to ignore the biomass contribution and move directly to e-fuels and e-products which are at least 3-4 time more costly resulting in stalling efforts to address climate change.
However, what is true is that the EU policies continue to change creating uncertainties to investors who prefer to invest elsewhere even when financing European technologies outside of the EU.
At the same time high and overambitious policy targets are being set to the extent that stakeholders have concluded that the 2030 targets are unrealistic and not achievable. The European Commission with the RED directive has by itself, singlehanded, managed to unwrap the Single European Market by allowing Members States to adopt national policies that may restrict the free movement of low carbon fuels, products and related services.
The burden has been placed on the industry to deliver huge volumes of biomass feedstocks, biofuels, biomaterials and biochemicals in an unprecedented fashion and rush. The size of the required investments entailed in such accelerated deployment is equally unheard of while at the same time investors are shy due to the ever-changing legislative landscape. With the withdrawal of big oil, the burden is now placed on the shoulders of the technology developers and the biomass industry to integrate innovation for the development of technologies for market penetration of sustainable products and services.
I strongly believe that if we unite our efforts, we can achieve significant progress even without big oil; we will move slower but steadily!
All the above issues result into a complex and multifaceted situation with more questions than answers. In The Hague we can’t promise that we will be able to answer all your questions; however, we aim to have an excellent array of speakers and numerous of your peers attending either as speakers or in the exhibition. You are given a unique opportunity to join us and network while engaging your peers.

The EUBCE in The Hague is the biomass conference to attend in 2026! Do join us next May. Together we can make a much-needed difference in troubled times!
