From Residual Biomass to Low-Carbon Aviation and Maritime Fuels: A Stakeholder workshop

Advanced bio-based fuels are increasingly recognised as an important option for reducing emissions in sectors where electrification remains challenging, particularly aviation and maritime transport. The ABATE project focuses on the development of sustainable intermediate bio-based fuels produced from residual biomass, which can be co-processed in existing refinery infrastructure to support the defossilisation of aviation and maritime fuels.

This side event workshop invites EUBCE participants to take part in a structured, interactive backcasting exercise exploring how such fuel pathways could be developed in ways that are technically feasible, environmentally robust, economically viable, and socially acceptable. Rather than focusing on abstract debates, the workshop encourages participants to reflect on realistic future pathways, key trade-offs, and enabling conditions across the value chain.
