Circular Bioeconomy
The tour will enable conference participants to experience and learn about two industrial facilities where biomass resources are being utilized in different ways, but that have in common the application of innovative technologies and/or processes.
ALGAFARM MICROALGAE FACILITY

The unit operates in closed systems, based around the processes of photosynthesis and fermentation. Currently, this is the biggest microalgae production unit in Europe and work is being developed to optimize and scale up the production process, while bolstering the use of CO2 by the microalgae.
The unit is the result of a strong investment by Secil in I&D.
MARTO’S WOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY Click for extended info

The availability of a large quantity of by-products from the sawmill activities, namely wood chips and sawdust, led Martos Group to invest in a pellet production unit in 2010. The investment in pellet production allows Martos to generate value for its own by-products and create synergies with local sawmills that since became important partners for the production of renewable and sustainable high-quality biofuel.
Martos Group is an example of Circular Economy application in a forest-based industry in regards to the use of wood raw material, sawmill by-products valorization, pellets production and the use of forest biomass for energy purposes.
TECHNICAL FEATURES
- Nominal production of sawn wood: 17.500 m3/year
- Nominal production of wood pallets: 900.000 unit/year
- Nominal capacity of Heat Treatment (HT) for 15.000 pallets/week
- 4 MW biomass boiler
- Nominal production of wood pellets: 25.000 tons/year
- By-Products from sawmill consumed in the production of wood pellets: 150.000 m3/year
- 75% of the raw material consumed in the production of wood pellets comes from its own sawmill, mainly pine (pinus pinaster), the further from local sawmills.
- 4 MW biomass furnace
- Biomass from forest consumed in the production of thermal energy: 15.000 tons/year
- 95 direct jobs
